North Bay

The City of North Bay is located at the crossroads of the trans-Canada highways 11 and 17. Known as the gateway to the Northern Ontario, the city was built on the shores of Lake Nipissing. While surrounding communities were industrializing in the early twentieth century, North Bay positioned itself as a service center for them (eg, health, education, etc.). North Bay is also famous because it housed until recently the only Canadian Aerospace Defense base command of North America. This base was moved to Winnipeg, but the 22nd Wing North Bay of Canada Air Forces continues to play a role in the surveillance, identification, control warning for the aerospace defense of Canada and North America. Since the municipality is included in one of the regions designated under the French Language Services Act of regions of Ontario, the francophones who live there have access to a wide range of government services in French. The Government of the Canada also offers its services in French.

Total Population: 63.424
Francophone Population: 11,000 (17%)
